JULY IS NATIONAL HOT DOG MONTH !!! Some Interesting Facts...
JULY IS NATIONAL HOT DOG MONTH !!! Some Interesting Facts...

All kinds of crazy things happen in July and one of them is it's NATIONAL HOT DOG MONTH ! The National Hot Dog and Sausage Council estimates that Americans consume over 7 billion hot dogs a year.  Yes, I said 7 billion!!!!!  A typical American on average eats 60 hot dogs annually.  It's commonly overlooked as one of the top comfort foods.

Now, where did they name " hot dog" originate from? Well, in 1901 a man named Tad Dorgan, a sports cartoonist, was at a baseball game in New  York.  Vendors at the game were selling " hot daschund sausages in a roll".  Mr. Dorgan was sketching a cartoon of the scene as the vendors shouted, " Get your Hot Daschund Sausages in a roll ! ! !"  As he was completeing his sketch of the vendors shouting, he was not sure how to spell "daschund" and so he shortened it to, as we all now know, "HOT DOG" . And so there you have a piece of history.

Now everyone asks this compelling question, " What is a hot dog made of?" To tell you the truth, noone is absolutely sure.  I can tell you this though.  Hot dogs are made up of what the council calls " Special meat trimmings".   ? ? ? ? The U.S. Department of Agriculture has enforced regulations that make hot dogs much leaner now, more muscle.  By law, up to 3.5% of " non meat ingredients" are allowed in a hot dog.  Usually these are dairy or soy products that add nutritional value.  While hot dogs are high in fat and sodium, they are also a good source of protein and iron. So add your favorite condiments: ketchup, mustard, relish, cheese, chili, peppers, etc.  That's the amazing thing about a hot dog, you can add just about anything to it and it tastes uniques everytime.  So eat up Jacksonville!!!!!
