High school students invited to create bear-awareness video for FWC contest

 

High school students interested in conserving the Florida black bear and raising public awareness about bears are invited to create a 1-minute video.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) is extending the deadline in its 2011 Florida black bear public service announcement (PSA) contest. Launched in May, the FWC-sponsored contest now has a deadline of Nov. 18.

Picking the perfect pumpkin is no “one size fits all” event! That’s why you need truckloads (2 to be exact) to choose from. Starting Saturday, October 1st the front lawn of Jacksonville’s Southside United Methodist Church (SUMC), AKA “The Point”’ will be covered with pumpkins for PUMPKINS ON THE POINT! We invite the community to join in the fun of this annual tradition.

JFRD Rescues Boy, Dog from Mandarin Home

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A boy is critical after being stuck inside a home that caught fire in Mandarin, according to Jacksonville Fire and Rescue spokesperson Tom Francis.

Fire crews rescued the young man and a dog from the burning home, and Francis said it appears the fire started in the kitchen.  The child went to Baptist Hospital downtown to receive treatment in a hyperbaric chamber, Francis said.

The fire broke out in the 10500 block of Indian Walk Road at about 4 p.m., and Francis said that closed Hartley Road for a short period of time.

Scot Ackerman, M.D. of First Coast Oncology has announced his third annual essay contest for local high school students, “Students Who Care.”  The topic for this year’s contest is: “Plato said ‘Necessity is the mother of invention.’ In what innovative ways would you solve the challenges that the public education system faces today?”

Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals will officially announce that Ace Hardware is the sponsor for the 2011 Champions Program.  In conjunction with its title sponsorship of this year’s Champions Program, Ace Hardware, in partnership with our vendor partner, Procter & Gamble, will conduct an in-store product promotion and icon campaign fundraiser to benefit Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals.

This October pink is the new black.  Women and a few good men from all over the first coast will be putting on their pink bras in support of breast cancer awareness month. The "Put on Your Pink Bra" concept is part of a statewide American Cancer Society campaign designed to empower women.

To get in the spirit of Breast Cancer Awareness month, St. Vincent's HealthCare will host a bra decorating party at Maggiano's Little Italy at the St.Johns Town Center on September 20th from 5:30-8:30 p.m.  The event is free and open to the public, but seating is limited.  RSPV today for one of the two sessions (5 p.m.-6:15 p.m. or 6:30 p.m.-8 p.m.) at www.jaxhealth.com/braparty or call 308-6155.  You will need to bring your own pink bra to the party, but we will supply the decorations.
