Jax man and his teenage son die in crash on Florida's Turnpike | News
Jacksonville Fla. -- Martin Reed's wife, Angela, lost both her husband and youngest son in an accident near Orlando that has local families and friends trying to understand how it could happen.
Martin Reed, 44, and Brendan, 16, were traveling in a truck pulling a trailer southbound on the Florida Turnpike in Osceola County according to a report from the Florida Highway Patrol.
In front of them was a semi-truck that troopers say began to slow down to get off the turnpike, but Reed's vehicle did not brake in time and struck the back of the semi-truck. Reed's truck became interlocked with the semi-truck, according to FHP.
Martin Reed died at the scene of the crash and Brendan Reed was transported to Arnold Palmer Hospital, where he died from his injuries.
Reed owned Park Avenue Billiards in Orange Park. His son, Brendan, was a sophomore at Mandarin High School.
"A good family man, he would do anything for anybody," said Nick Kelly who worked at the pool hall that Reed has owned for several years.
The Reed family lives in a Mandarin neighborhood where a cross with flowers now stands near the driveway.
Neighbors quickly learned of the accident that happened Friday morning.
"He was really, really working hard trying to make a few extra dollars taking care of his family like everybody does," said Jodi Campbell who lives two doors down from the Reed family.
The Reeds are planning a memorial service for the father and son at Park Avenue Billiards, the business Martin built and where he enjoyed playing the game he loved.
All parties involved in the accident were wearing seatbelts. The crash is still under investigation by FHP.
