During the presentation portion of the monthly meeting of the Duval County School Board, Superintendent Ed Pratt-Dannals and Board members recognized teachers, volunteers, a community partner and business partners for their outstanding accomplishments and contributions to Duval County Public Schools:

Students in the I’m A Star program made a presentation to School Board members and the community about what they have done as part of the program to help students cope with issues like divorce, bullying and teen suicide.

Youmone Berrien, activities director and AP honors coordinator at First Coast High,  was recognized for being selected as the 2011 Florida Blue Teacher of the Year;

The following volunteers were recognized for receiving the 2010-11 Outstanding School Volunteer

Awards:

  • Dejan Antunovic, Youth Volunteer of the Year;
  • Sharon Hodges, Adult Volunteer of the Year; and
  • Nina Beale, Senior Volunteer of the Year;
  • Elizabeth Stansel, history teacher at Darnell-Cookman Middle/High, was recognized for being selected as the WJCT Mission U.S. Educator of the Year;
  • Pastor John Guns, with John E. Guns Ministries, was recognized for his partnerships with Raines and Ribault high schools; and

The following businesses were recognized for receiving the Commissioner’s Business Recognition Awards:

  • ACES Advisory Board, for their partnership with Terry Parker High;
  • Jacksonville Giants, for their partnership with Mandarin Middle; and
  • West Normandy Baptist Church, for their partnership with Normandy Village Elementary.

Duval County Public Schools operates 172 schools and serves approximately 123,000 students.
