You Can Change a Child’s Life by Becoming a Foster Parent

Nearly 400 children currently live in foster homes in Duval, Nassau and Clay counties. Every week, about 20 children enter child welfare in the tri-county area. These children are removed from their homes for a planned, temporary period of time.

Some are placed with relatives, some are placed in group homes, and many are placed in foster homes where they will be cared for by loving, nurturing and supportive foster parents.

Family Support Services of North Florida (FSS) is hosting an open house for prospective foster parents in the tri-county area on Dec. 9, 10 and 11 to provide information about foster parenting, explain the role and responsibilities of foster parents and answer questions about becoming a foster parent.

The informational open house will be held at the FSS Cassat House, a neighborhood service center at 2200 Cassat Avenue on Jacksonville’s westside. Open house hours are: 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 9 and Friday, Dec. 10; and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 11.

“We invite all interested adults to attend the open house and find out about becoming a foster parent,” said Jim Adams, FSS CEO. “We know there are many caring and nurturing parents in our community who can open their homes to a foster child and change their life forever.”

“Come to the open house and find out about foster parent training and licensing, the guideline and requirements involved and the financial support provided to foster parents,” Adams said. “FSS staff will be available to answer any questions and explain how foster parenting works.”

Foster parents provide the same care that the child’s biological parents would. They also help the child understand that they will either be returning to their own families or may be adopted into a new family.

Foster families provide for the physical and emotional safety of children and provide foster children a stable, caring home.
