22-Year-Old DUI Victim Laid To Rest Saturday

JACKSONVILLE, Fla - Family and friends gathered at Christ Church in Mandarin Saturday morning to remember the life of 22-year-old Catherine Case who was killed by a teenage driver under the influence of alcohol.

Case was driving on County Road 218 in Clay County last Saturday night before midnight when she was hit head on by a vehicle driven by 17-year old Andrew Newman.  Newman was driving a pickup truck when police say he veered into the other lane and hit Case.

The Florida Highway Patrol says the accident was alcohol related and Newman was not wearing a seatbelt. He had serious injuries. Charges are pending in the case.

Case was a 2007 graduate of Mandarin High and was a junior on the Dean's list at UNF, majoring in Biology. She is survived by her parents, two brothers, a sister and grandfather.

The family requested donations be made to the local chapter of Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD).
